A Reliable Panorama Stitching Workflow
Follow a repeatable panorama stitching workflow from frame selection through projection, seam checks, and final export.
Start with an organized source set
Copy the original camera files to a working folder before opening them. Keep the sequence together, preserve the originals, and identify the first and last frame so the stitcher does not accidentally include a neighboring shot.
Select frames with consistent focus and exposure. A frame with a person moving through it or a hand covering the lens is usually safer to exclude than to repair later.
- Sort by capture time and use a consistent filename prefix.
- Keep RAW files or the highest-quality originals as the stitching source.
- Reject frames with motion blur, accidental tilt, or missing overlap.
Develop consistently before stitching
Apply the same lens profile, white balance, exposure, and noise treatment to every frame. Avoid cropping individual frames, because unequal edges can remove the overlap needed for control points.
If the scene has a large brightness range, merge or tone-map the bracketed positions consistently before assembling the panorama. Do not mix differently rendered versions of adjacent frames.
- Synchronize corrections rather than adjusting each frame by eye.
- Disable automatic cropping and local retouching until after the stitch.
- Export intermediate files in a format that preserves editing latitude.
Choose projection and solve the stitch
Let the application detect lens geometry and create control points, then inspect the preview at the intended field of view. Cylindrical projection often suits a wide horizontal view; equirectangular projection is required for a full 360-degree image.
Place or correct control points on stationary details at different distances when automatic matching fails. Keep points away from moving subjects, featureless sky, and reflections.
- Confirm that the frame order and camera orientation are correct.
- Use straight architectural lines to judge projection and horizon behavior.
- Re-optimize after correcting a bad control point, then inspect the full width.
Blend, crop, and inspect at full size
Use the stitcher's seam and exposure blending tools, but do not trust a small preview alone. View the result at 100 percent around windows, rails, tree branches, water, and other high-contrast edges.
Crop empty borders only after leveling the panorama. For an interactive 360, retain the complete equirectangular canvas and avoid cropping away the top, bottom, or wraparound edge.
- Check the left and right edges as a pair to catch a visible join.
- Repair ghosting, seams, and tripod areas in a pixel editor on a layered copy.
- Save a high-quality master before making a delivery-size export.
Common mistakes and a final checklist
The most common failures are inconsistent frame development, too few matching details, and exporting a flat panorama with the wrong projection metadata. A panorama can look fine as a rectangle yet fail to wrap correctly in a viewer.
Before delivery, use this short checklist:
- All intended frames are present and in order.
- Exposure, white balance, and lens corrections match across frames.
- Horizon, seams, moving objects, and the nadir have been inspected at full size.
- The master is saved separately from the web or viewer export.
- Projection, dimensions, and spherical metadata match the destination.
