How Much Overlap Does a Panorama Need?

Understand the purpose
A stitcher needs recognizable features in neighboring frames to calculate their relationship. Overlap is not wasted coverage: it is the shared evidence that lets the software align and blend images.
The ideal amount depends on lens angle of view, image detail, projection, and how accurately the camera rotates. More overlap generally increases the chance of finding control points, at the cost of more files.
Use a repeatable rotation
Mark the panorama head or use its detents so every turn is repeatable. A simple rule is to use enough frames that adjacent views share a broad region, then add an extra frame when the scene has little texture.
Do not estimate overlap by the edge of the visible subject alone. Lens distortion changes the apparent spacing, especially with wide lenses.
- Keep the camera height and pitch constant.
- Rotate around the intended axis rather than swinging the camera by hand.
- Use a second ring or vertical coverage when one row leaves gaps above or below.
Adapt to the subject
Detailed architecture, foliage, and textured interiors provide useful features. Plain walls, water, glass, and repeating shelves provide fewer unique matches, so overlap and careful control points become more important.
Nearby objects can reveal parallax even when overlap is generous. Improve the rotation axis first; do not try to solve every alignment problem by simply taking more frames.
Handle motion
Moving subjects may appear in two frames at different positions. Wait for a clear interval, change the capture order when practical, or plan to mask an unwanted occurrence during editing.
A larger overlap does not prevent ghosting if a person moves between exposures. It only gives the stitcher more shared image area.
Mistakes and checklist
Too little overlap, uneven rotation, assuming a wide lens needs only a few frames, and ignoring the top and bottom are common mistakes.
Checklist: choose a repeatable increment, maintain broad shared detail, add coverage for plain scenes, complete the vertical area, and inspect the first-to-last join.
