How to Straighten a Curved Panorama Horizon
Correct a curved panorama horizon by choosing the right projection, leveling the image, and checking lens geometry.
Identify the kind of curve
A horizon that bows across the whole image is often a projection choice or an unlevel rotation axis. A curve that changes abruptly between frames can indicate poor lens calibration or an incorrect control point.
Use distant architecture, a shoreline, or a known level as a guide. Do not use a foreground railing if parallax has shifted it between frames.
- Inspect the preview before cropping.
- Compare the curve with straight verticals near the edges.
- Separate global geometry problems from one-frame stitching errors.
Level the panorama first
Set a horizontal reference through a genuinely level feature, then rotate or pitch the panorama until that feature sits correctly. In a 360 workflow, use the stitcher's horizon or viewpoint controls rather than painting pixels into place.
If the camera was tilted during capture, leveling may reveal blank corners. Fill those areas only after the projection and crop are correct.
- Use several vertical and horizontal control lines when the application supports them.
- Recalculate the preview after changing the camera orientation.
- Keep a layered copy before destructive transforms.
Test another projection
A cylindrical view can make a broad horizontal scene feel natural, while rectilinear projection can keep moderate fields of view visually straight. Equirectangular projection deliberately maps a sphere to a rectangle, so a line away from the equator may not appear straight.
Choose the projection for the delivery format. Do not force every panorama into a flat perspective if it will be viewed interactively.
- Preview cylindrical, rectilinear, and equirectangular options where available.
- Judge the horizon and edge stretching at the final viewing angle.
- Export the projection expected by the panorama viewer.
Avoid the common fixes that backfire
A large freehand warp can straighten one portion while damaging nearby architecture and making the panorama impossible to wrap. Likewise, cropping a curved horizon hides the symptom but wastes image area.
If the curve persists, return to lens calibration and control points. A frame with incorrect distortion correction can pull the seam away from the rest of the horizon.
- Do not stretch individual frames independently after stitching.
- Do not use a foreground object as the sole leveling reference.
- Do not crop before deciding whether the panorama is spherical.
Final geometry checklist
Make one complete pass at the panorama's intended output size. Confirm the center, both wraparound edges, and the top and bottom before saving.
- A distant level reference is straight or intentionally mapped.
- Vertical architecture does not lean unexpectedly.
- No blank corners remain after leveling and cropping.
- The left and right edges meet cleanly if the image is a full 360.
- The export projection matches the viewer.
