How to Fix a Distorted Panorama
Fix bowed horizons and stretched panoramas by checking projection, lens calibration, control points, and the final viewer.
Identify the kind of distortion
A curved horizon is usually a projection or camera-level problem, while a sudden kink often points to a bad control point. Objects that grow at the edges can be normal perspective in a wide field of view, but extreme stretching suggests the wrong lens information or projection.
Open the panorama at 100 percent and inspect a straight architectural edge, the horizon, and the seams. Note whether the problem is global or confined to one overlap before restitching.
- Bow across the entire frame: test cylindrical, spherical, or rectilinear output.
- One bent seam: inspect and remove suspect control points.
- Uneven scale: verify focal length, crop factor, and lens profile.
Rebuild the stitch with sound geometry
Start from the original files rather than an exported panorama. Enter the correct lens and crop information, then let the stitcher detect features. Manually add pairs of matching points on distant, fixed details if automatic alignment is weak.
Use points at different distances and across several overlaps. Avoid placing points on people, foliage, reflections, or moving vehicles because those features can pull the geometry in conflicting directions.
- Keep the camera rotation centered on the lens's nodal point as closely as your setup allows.
- Check that every frame is in the intended order and orientation.
- Optimize alignment before applying heavy warping or retouching.
Choose a projection and straighten it
Select a projection that matches the delivery. Equirectangular is appropriate for an interactive 360 viewer; rectilinear is often better for a normal perspective crop. A projection cannot recover missing coverage, but it can prevent a valid panorama from appearing incorrectly shaped.
After stitching, level the horizon with the editor's yaw, pitch, and roll controls. Make small changes and check vertical lines at both edges; forcing a distant horizon through a single point can make nearby buildings look worse.
Common mistakes and a final checklist
Do not use a crop or resize as the first fix. It can hide a bent edge while preserving incorrect geometry, and repeatedly exporting can reduce detail.
Before delivery, make a quick pass through these checks:
- Confirm projection, lens data, and image order.
- Inspect seams and straight lines at full size.
- Remove control points on moving or reflective subjects.
- Level the horizon, then export from the original stitch.
- Open the exported file in the target viewer.
