Compare partial panoramas with full 360 captures and choose the right coverage, composition, and delivery format.
Define the viewing goal
A partial panorama is a wide photograph with a selected beginning and end. It gives you control over composition and can avoid unhelpful areas such as a blank wall or a busy service road.
A full 360 is intended to surround the viewer. It must cover the complete horizontal circle and usually needs deliberate treatment of the ceiling and floor.
- Choose partial coverage for a framed editorial or landscape image.
- Choose full coverage for navigation, documentation, or an interactive tour.
- Decide the delivery platform before choosing the projection and crop.
Plan the composition
For a partial panorama, begin and end on visually quiet areas when possible. Keep important subjects away from the final crop edges and leave enough overlap for the stitch.
For a full 360, select a forward direction for the viewer even though the capture wraps around. Place the most important view away from the seam when the platform allows a starting heading.
Capture the necessary coverage
Both formats benefit from locked exposure, focus, white balance, and consistent rotation. A partial panorama can stop after the last useful view, but it still needs overlap between its first and final neighboring frames.
A full 360 requires a closure check. Capture enough upward and downward coverage for the intended projection instead of assuming the horizontal ring covers every direction.
Avoid format confusion
A wide image is not automatically a 360. An interactive viewer expects a complete equirectangular or otherwise supported panorama, while a partial image should be delivered as a normal wide photograph unless the platform explicitly supports partial views.
Do not stretch a partial panorama to fill a 360 canvas. The result distorts subjects and creates misleading navigation.
Mistakes and checklist
Common mistakes include stopping early on a promised 360, cropping out the floor or ceiling without checking the viewer, placing a seam through the main subject, and exporting a partial image with 360 metadata.
